trendy zone: GAM

If I'm not mistaken, you have to take the red line and walk off from Universidad de Chile's subway station or you can get there dropping at bellas artes on the green line (and then walk a few minutes inside the coolest neighborhood ever which became the most repeated place while I was living in Chile, Lastarria) and its there in the heart of Santiago, where at first glance an impressive geometry can be perceived, built by assemblies of volumes that embrace between to set an encounter of us and culture: the cultural Center Gabriela Mistral.
The GAM is a center dedicated to the diffusion of art and culture, seeking to create a social transformation based on the promotion of new audiences through the diffusion of artistic and human experiences. It's created on september 2010, taking advantage of what was left from the Diego de Portales building (Antique convention center raised on 1972) and its executed by Cristian Fernandez Arquitectos studio and Lateral Arquitectura after having won first place within 55 projects in the competition to revitalize it.
The meaning this building takes inside one of the most dynamic sets in the city is of great importance, as well the urban impact that is provocated in its surroundings. I Remember that move around it became my main route during my stay in Santiago. Everyday comming out from college or home to get a cup of coffee at the wonderful cafe, or on my way to the workshop where I started to design my first shoes. Few were the days that I could not walk around it and I have to admit that such a big and harmonic scale like this becomes so familiar and inevitable to interact. I was lucky enough to enjoy the theater many times. Simply, just the whole program of activities (continually renewed) that is done there is amazing.

The concept of this place lies in one word: transparency. Undoubtedly, the relationship the GAM causes within its context is thanks to its openness to the city generating possibilities between public space and the relationships under its covers. For the authors, a building like this linked to the arts and culture should have varying degrees of transparency. Formally, we can see this through his façade system that gradually ranges from the totally open and transparent to fully opaque and closed. Cristian Fernandez, argues that: 'the essence of a performing arts hall must be completely disconnected with external reality in order to create its own reality'. Thus, situations get generated in boxers or containers where inside music dance and theater occurs while the spaces in between are transformed into an invitation for the people transiting to make it own and merge with.
What I like about this building is the existing narrative in their shapes and materials. The expressiveness of perforated steel as protagonist, reinforced concrete fully naked revealing a light track of unions as a kind of brutalism (just to name LeCorbusier) and the fusion of glass, steel and wood make it an object of admiration. Each fold of the building is synchronized with the program. One can walk around and see the noble steel as the skin of the building itself trying to cover everything and then is interrupted by a transition of glass volume allowing you to see what goes on in specifics points. The light that is dropped across this rusty monster is unusual, it always generate different readings. Moreover, if you go inside you get captivated by double and triple heights as well wood and steel ribbons that draw paths leading to a unique experience. 22,000 m2 of surface that you can not miss if you go to Chile.
